Objectives
This seminar has been organised with the intention of gaining an insight on river
physical habitat assessment methods. The intention is to review different approaches
to assess river physical habitat that are being applied in Spain and Europe and
to draw conclusions for future physical habitat assessment protocols.
The main objective of the seminar is to:
• Identify fluvial processes that generate and maintain river physical habitat
• Recognize river physical habitat characteristics that may be relevant for fluvial
biological communities
• Review methods of physical habitat assessment in rivers
• Draw conclusions from the results presented by the different participants
The seminar contributions and conclusions will be compiled in a book titled “Physical
Habitat Assessment Methods: from the basin to cobbles”. The contents of this book
will follow the structure of the seminar
Structure
The seminar will consist on two days, being the first day open to all interested
people while only invited people will participate in the meeting of the second day.
The first day of the seminar will be structured in four sections that will help
to understand the need for river physical habitat assessment, the key elements determining
physical habitat characteristics and the methodologies that are currently being
used in Spain and Europe. The second day will consist of an expert meeting in which
different aspects of PHAM in rivers will be discussed and conclusions will be drawn
accordingly.
